Seroquel has many side effects, but if the drug is used or abused in the long-term, there are other effects to consider. A person can be prescribed Seroquel for a considerable length of time, or someone may become addicted to the drug, causing multiple issues both with mental and physical health. Consider these long-term side effects of Seroquel use and abuse.

Seroquel Use and Abuse

Taking Seroquel for a long time can have side effects down the line.

According to the DailyMed, Seroquel is usually prescribed for certain episodes of mania which bipolar individuals experience and to those who are diagnosed with schizophrenia. “Long-term treatment of bipolar disorder” is another way Seroquel is prescribed, and schizophrenia requires long-term treatment as well. Although the medication is approved for long-term treatment, always ask your doctor any questions about the medication and what its side effects are. If you feel any change in your health or behavior during your Seroquel use, tell your doctor as soon as possible.

People also abuse the drug, often with other illicit drugs like cocaine and heroin. This can become very problematic as the two drugs listed above are highly addictive and the use of Seroquel with them heightens their effects. A person can become addicted to Seroquel with or without these drugs in the long-term and experience side effects.

Long-term Side Effects of Seroquel

Seroquel has many side effects that can become problematic after long-term use. According to the NLM, weight gain is one of the more extreme long-term side effects of Seroquel use. A person’s appetite will likely increase when he or she is on Seroquel and this often leads to “excessive weight gain.” Issues may arise from this effect such as:

  • Diabetes
  • High triglycerides
  • High cholesterol

The NLM recommends that you “talk to your doctor about ways to control weight gain, such as eating a healthy, balanced diet and exercising.”

Another side effect that may develop after long-term use of Seroquel is tardive dyskinesia. This effect is often caused by other antipsychotic medication and can be very upsetting for someone. Tardive dyskinesia involves these signs and symptoms:

  • Strange movements of your lips, mouth, face, and tongue
  • Movements that cannot be controlled
  • Similar movements of the arms and legs
  • Uncontrollable grimacing or sucking

If you begin to exhibit these signs while taking Seroquel, see your doctor immediately.

Seroquel use also causes some dysfunction of sexual organs, secondary sex characteristics, and sexual desires during long-term use. Some of these effects are:

  • Priapism, or a “painful erection of the penis that last for hours”
    • This can be very dangerous and painful. Seek help immediately if you begin to develop signs of this side effect.
  • Males developing enlarged breasts
  • Decreased desire or inability for sex
  • “Discharge from the breasts”

Like all medications, Seroquel has side effects that result after long-term use. If you begin to exhibit these side effects however, do not immediately stop taking the medication. You may experience withdrawal symptoms including insomnia, vomiting, and nausea. Go to your doctor and express your desire to stop using Seroquel. You will be tapered off of the medication to avoid strong withdrawal symptoms and likely placed on a different medication.
