It has been an open secret that almost every drug, be it prescription or non-prescription, comes with side effects. The side effects may either be positive or negative. Note that, even when different individuals are taking the same drug, there will be variations in the side effects. This underlines the fact that the occurrence of side effects will depend on factors such as the amount taken, how it was taken, the health of the individual, as well as whether the individual combined it with other substances. All these facts apply to Seroquel.

Also known as “quetiapine fumarate,” Seroquel has been widely used in health facilities in the treatment of a number of conditions, including bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, manic depression, and even sleeping disorders. In many cases, the drug has been found to be very useful in assuaging the withdrawal symptoms when one is recovering from alcohol addiction

Seroquel Addiction Side Effects

It is important to acknowledge that at no one time would the drug cure the bipolar disorder or schizophrenia. Instead, it lessens the symptoms that come with these disorders. In fact, individuals who take these drugs have been known to improve quite tremendously, thereby underlining the effectiveness of these drugs in assuaging these symptoms.

Given that the drug works by modifying or changing the levels of chemicals in the brain, it definitely means that some of the side effects that individuals will exhibit actually touch on the thinking capacity of the individual. Note that not every individual who consumes the drug would necessarily experience these side effects. Actually, many people tolerate the drug quite well. In most cases, when the side effects occur, they will be minor, thereby necessitating no treatment, or be treated easily at home or in health care facilities.

Some of the most common side effects that come with Seroquel addiction include:

  • Agitation
  • Dizziness
  • Dry mouth
  • Headaches
  • Drowsiness
  • Irritability
  • Weight gain
  • High triglycerides
  • General body weakness
  • Gastrointestinal problems

Other common side effects include nausea, heartburn or indigestion, vomiting, lethargy, increased appetite, nasal congestion, shakiness (tremors), back and abdominal pain, irritability, sore throat, joint pains, and fever. Some serious side effects may also be common, including tachycardia (rapid heart beat) and even vision problems.

While many people would be surprised to hear of the addictive nature of the drug, it is important to acknowledge that it could also have serious side effects, some even which life are threatening. These may include signs of diabetes, like increased thirst, frequent urination, extreme hunger, and high blood sugar. The individual may also experience suicidal thoughts, quick weight gain, jitteriness or internal restlessness, and even abnormal movement of the muscles, which may become permanent in case the individual does not stop taking the drug very quickly.

There are also instances when the individual exhibits signs of neuroleptic malignant syndrome, including stiff muscles, high fever, confusion, irregular blood pressure, increased sweating, and even irregular rhythm of the heart. Allergic reactions may also occur, including rashes, wheezing, sneezing, unexplained swelling, and hives. All these would require the immediate attention of qualified medical practitioners.
